“Libiamo” Among the Lemons

I love when I hear about nonprofits doing innovative marketing like this: Granted, they didn’t think of the idea first (they were inspired by this stunt), but the execution was fabulous.  Just look at all those SMILES in the audience! You can’t buy that kind of goodwill, you have to create it.

Marketing 101: How to Pull Off a Brilliant Publicity Stunt

Watch and learn: Because of the language barrier, I’m not clear on whether the company was promoting Verdi’s La Traviata or just having fun, but if they were doing the show I’d bet a large number of those present  went out and bought tickets pronto. Every single one of them will tell their friends about [...]

Museums and YouTube

I came across an interesting article this morning which discusses the use of YouTube (and other social media) to promote museums. This is a great way to engage visitors (and potential visitors) with which, for the most part, museums are only dabbling. The article mentions one major exception and I LOVE their approach! …the Brooklyn [...]

Free Stuff Friday: Fun with Flash

Free Stuff Friday is back! (Cue the cheers!) For those of you who don’t know, I love websites. I love to create them, design them, and obsessively tweak them. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that I’ve been playing around with flash lately. I don’t know a lot about how to make [...]

Michael Kaiser Says – "Arts in Crisis"

I just read a thought provoking article by Michael Kaiser (President of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Nonprofit Turn-around Guru). There’s a healthy debate in the comments section of the article too, but I have to say, I agree whole-heartedly with what Mr. Kaiser has to say. I think he hit the nail right on the head in identifying the real issue.

Should Nonprofits Tweet?

Answer: It depends.

On what, you say?

Well, for starters, the type of nonprofit. Social welfare organizations, grassroots political activists—anyone with a message or a cause—can potentially harness the power of Twitter to spread the word like wildfire. Case in point: #iranelection. When used wisely, it could be mind-bogglingly effective.

However, I’ve noticed a trend among other nonprofits—arts organizations, in particular—to use Twitter, frankly, wrong. The difference seems to be a drive to sell v. raising awareness.
